The introduction of West Yorkshire’s first ever Mayor comes at a pivotal moment for the region. A devolution deal for the region and the inaugural election for a new mayor present once-in-a-generation opportunity for transformational change in West Yorkshire.
In recent years, thanks to strong civic and business leadership, West Yorkshire has transformed its economy to be increasingly knowledge-based and attracted significant inward investment. But the challenges of widening inequality, poverty, climate change, economic instability, and an uncertain future remain for our town and city centres, all of which have been exacerbated by COVID-19.
We have used our wide expertise and local knowledge from working in West Yorkshire for over 50 years to come up with a set of policy ideas for the next mayor. The ideas are designed around sustainable development and are set to be achievable within the first mayoral term in a way that is distinctively West Yorkshire.
