Ports for offshore wind cover

Ports for offshore wind: a review of the net-zero opportunity for ports in Scotland

This report, commissioned by Crown Estate Scotland, reviews the opportunity for Scotland’s ports to support the large volume of offshore wind development required to reach Net Zero. It follows the launch by Crown Estate Scotland of Scotland’s first offshore wind leasing round for a decade, ScotWind Leasing, which is set to kick start Scotland’s new generation of offshore wind farms and build new demand for port infrastructure.

Challenges and opportunities for port infrastructure provision in Scotland are identified and recommendations made, including:

  • Taking steps to increase the port capacity that is suitable for large scale offshore wind developments, in particular for the large construction phase port activities

  • Establishing a national strategic approach to how offshore wind port facilities are developed

  • Developing new optimal operation & maintenance facilities which open up the right opportunities for Scotland’s ports
