Urban Supply Chains and the Impact of COVID-19

The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 caused significant disruption to global logistics networks, with shocks felt across entire supply chains from production to consumption.

In particular, the lockdowns and stay-at-home orders associated with the first wave in Australia had a significant impact on inner city logistics. Observers reported a significant drop in commercial deliveries in city centres during the lockdowns as workers stayed at home.

Arup and MobileDOCK have looked to quantify this impact through the analysis of real-time data generated by MobileDOCK’s loading dock management system and engagement via survey with inner-city dock operators who worked through the first wave.

The results may provide insight into what can be expected in future lockdowns and highlights opportunities for operators and government stakeholders to improve resilience and preparedness.
