Design book: 50 city stories explored

In the Design Book: 50 city stories explored we bring together innovative projects, shaped for and with cities around the world. We examine the ideas that help make great urban places – through design that is intelligent, beautiful, green, resilient, responsible and future-facing.

This is the ninth edition in Arup’s Design Book series. It focuses on the challenges that the world’s cities face as they tackle some of the world’s most pressing and diverse problems. To name a few, these include planning for and mitigating the effects of a changing climate; urbanisation; changing population shape; security of water, food and energy supply; an increasingly-mobile global population.

Through the book, we explore 50 stories of our work in cities, helping them to respond to these diverse needs.

The book also features input from four internationally-renowned commentators:

Judith Rodin – President of The Rockefeller Foundation
Edgar Pieterse – director of the African Centre for Cities
Clover Moore – Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney
Thomas Heatherwick - British designer and the founder of London-based design practice Heatherwick Studio
