African Institute of Science and Technology, Abuja, Nigeria

An exemplar university campus in Africa created to provide research facilities for science and engineering

This university campus for the African Institute of Science and Technology (AIST) was created to provide state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities for science and engineering and includes teaching classrooms and labs, student accommodation, offices, a hotel, conference facilities and a sports complex.

The campus consists of a green-field development plot between the city of Abuja and the international airport. The site is at the outermost edge of the urban masterplan for the future development of Abuja and hopes to provide not only a source of education but also employment to the local community.

The campus will be an exemplar project in Africa and the first of a possible 5 to be constructed over the coming 15 to 20 years.

Self-sustainability plans

There are currently no infrastructure services available anywhere near the site, other than some new road construction. The site will need to be self-sufficient in terms of electrical generation, water and drainage therefore a highly sustainable site infrastructure strategy must be developed.

Arup worked closely with Architect Fuksas and the client to provide full engineering services (SMEP) including lighting and IT.
