Providing acoustic flexibility for the £25m Aylesbury Waterside Theatre

The new £25m Aylesbury Waterside Theatre is the principal venue for entertainment in Aylesbury and the surrounding area.

The 1200 seat hall offers a space for all performance types, from touring opera, to dance and pop concerts. There is also a smaller 200 seat function suite for community events and small scale drama and music.

Arup achieved acoustic flexibility in the main hall by using a ‘Carmen’ electroacoustic enhancement system. At the flick of a switch, the system can recreate optimal acoustic conditions desirable for ballet, opera or classical concerts. It also retains a completely natural sound for both the audience and performers.

Arup's recommendation to use the 'Carmen' system meant that a smaller building was required, reducing construction and maintenance costs for the client.

The theatre contains two different performance spaces, catering for everything from touring opera, to community events. The theatre contains two different performance spaces, catering for everything from touring opera, to community events.
