Today, with 11 buildings set around three public squares, Brindleyplace is an exemplary mixed-use, city centre development. The story of this former brownfield site’s rejuvenation, illustrates the need for meticulous, flexible planning that can respond to changes in the market.
Arup has been involved with every phase of Brindleyplace. Two decades of work began with the site infrastructure, traffic planning and services diversion works across the whole site. We also provided expertise in structural, mechanical, electrical and public health engineering for many of the buildings in the development.
Project Summary
20 years of multi-disciplinary services
600,000 sq. ft. of mixed use development
1st BREEAM excellent rated building in Birmingham

A first for Birmingham
The final office building, Number Eleven, was the first in Birmingham to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating. Arup's brief was to provide building services and engineering design for100,000 sq. ft. of office space on an extremely restricted site. The site was bounded by existing buildings and highways, and complicated by major utilities running through its centre. Working closely with the architect, Glenn Howells, we designed the building services to maximise the office floorplate and net lettable area while enabling each floorplate to be divisible. By analysing the facade, our building physicists helped optimise the architectural design to achieve low energy consumption.
