Enhancing British Land’s reputation as a sustainable property company

Arup worked with property company British Land to help the business to achieve its aim - to lead the market in developing and managing buildings in a sustainable manner, taking environmental, social and economic issues into account.

The firm provided British Land with the expertise to embed sustainability in its decision-making processes by devising and executing policies that benefit stakeholders, society and the environment, as well as the business.

Arup's work has included guidance on sustainable acquisition, design and planning, construction, asset management and refurbishment. The firm has also helped to draft and update British Land's corporate responsibility policy and annual corporate responsibility reports.  This has included advising on measurable key performance indicators for the company's corporate responsibility objectives and helping to set targets.

The work undertaken by Arup has helped British Land to make its properties more attractive places in which to work, live and visit. It has also helped to build relationships with local stakeholders and enhanced British Land's reputation as a top-performing, sustainable property company.

As a result, the company has won awards such as Building Magazine's Sustainable Developer of the Year 2007 and has been included in the 2008 list of 100 most sustainable corporations in the world.
