Copenhagen Opera House, Copenhagen

Acoustics design for the principal opera performance venue in Copenhagen

The new opera house is located on a central harbor side in Copenhagen. The building is the principal opera performance venue for Det Kongelige Teater (the Royal Theatre).

The 1,450 seat main auditorium and the studio stage, the Takelloftet, also present some ballet productions. The main theatre has a full wagon system for scenery movement. Scenery movements are inaudible to the audience, appreciably adding drama to the performance.

The building includes an orchestral rehearsal room and the usual opera and ballet rehearsal spaces, all fully sound isolated to permit multiple simultaneous use.

Arup provided full acoustic consultancy services, including the testing of a 1:25 scale acoustic model of the main auditorium and also designed an orchestral shell for symphonic music performances in the theatre.
