DNA Bridge, Enschede

An integral design effort of the client, architect, engineers and the suppliers

The new bridge in the bicycle highway F35 Twente takes the shape of a DNA-strand, a design by wUrck. In this region of the country a lot of arch bridges can be found. Pulling apart the traditional shape of the arch originates a unique asymmetrical form, which serves as a gateway to the traffic passing the bridge and entering the city of Enschede either by rail track or the road.

The bridge represents the DNA of the city, the Twente region and the Knowledge park and consists of a combination of high tech materials, such as a Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bridge deck. The new connection stimulates easier mobility in the area.

Steel arches carry the longitudinal span. The GFRP deck acts structurally together with the steel structure, reducing deflection and adding strength. The bridge is an integral design effort of the client, architect, engineers and the suppliers (deck and steel structure). This results in a slender and light weight hybrid structure, a true example of ‘total design’ and its advantages.
