Two underpasses linking Dongguan's tallest building with the major roads to improve traffic flow

The two underpasses, 190m and 170m respectively, will connect Dongguan International Trade Center-the city’s tallest building (another Arup job) with two major roads nearby to improve the traffic flow of the bustling commercial area.

Arup is providing total engineering services for this project, ranging from geotechnics, structuralmechanicalelectrical and public health engineering to transport consulting and fire design.

The project is on a very fast-track programme. The underpass box construction and recovery of the traffic on roads must be completed on time since the tunnel boring machine for Dongguan Railway Line 2 will pass under one of the underpasses. Arup engineers are working closely with various parties including the client and local authorities to ensure the timely delivery of the project.

Project Summary

2 underpasses; 190m and 170m respectively

20 underground pipelines across the underpass alignment adding to the challenge

1subway Line is planned to be under one of the underpass

There are over 20 underground pipelines across the underpass alignment with two important pressurised water pipes. These pose a number of technical challenges during excavation and protective measures will be designed to ensure continued service of the utilities. The clearance of the underpasses is also severely constrained by the quantity of utilities above the metro tunnels, and the design will be optimised to maximise the clearance.

Upon completion, the two underpasses will integrate the city’s new landmark building into the surrounding road network, effectively improving accessibility and the traffic flow around the development.
