Design concept with a maximum of pre-fabricated elements

EgeTrans Arena is a new ice rink with a capacity for 3,500 to 4,500 spectators. As the original arena no longer complied with the safety standards of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL), the Württembergian town of Bietigheim-Bissingen commissioned Arup, together with Schulitz Architekten, to design a new ice rink adjacent to the existing one.

Although the proposed design concept, the schedule and budget specifications were extremely ambitious, the combined efforts of our team managed to comply in all aspects. To shorten the construction period, we designed and engineered most of walls from the very beginning as prefabricated sandwich walls. We also designed the grandstand elements, stairways and landings as preassembled units.

Fish-bellied roof girders with a span of up to 60m were delivered in two halves, assembled on site, hoisted into position and connected up. Thanks to this method, we've made possible to erect and weatherproof the entire roof in a very short time period. To make sure that the surface of the ice cured in time for the planned opening, we protected it from all other building operations even before the roof was closed and a suitable subsurface was prepared.
