Multidisciplinary services for a pharmaceutical plant in Cork

Eli Lilly is a bulk manufacturing facility, located in Dunderrow, Kinsale, Co. Cork. The plant — one of 13 Lilly pharmaceutical plants worldwide — has been in production since 1981 and has significantly expanded over the past 25 years.

Arup was appointed by Eli Lilly as project manager, architectural and engineering designer for the installation of the new IE28 laboratory which included Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) and biotech laboratories to support pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturing operations.

The QA/QC labs, comprising approximately 2,300m², are large open plan laboratories which include a separate Microbiology lab and a Kilo lab.

The new building also includes approximately 1,700m² of biotech laboratories with bio reactors, autoclaves, parts washers, bio safety cabinets, fume hoods and critical utilities such as purified water, high purity gases and cooling systems.

Arup carried out the selection, procurement, installation, commissioning, installation qualification and operational qualification of much of this equipment.

Introducing innovations

Arup introduced a number of new innovations in laboratory design during this project which resulted in significant energy savings over traditional laboratories. Cost metrics for the final installation were achieved while maintaining a high quality laboratory facility.

As the laboratory operations in the completed phases had to be kept operational 24 hours a day during the construction of subsequent phases; the facility was delivered over a number of phases. Each phase of the project was delivered on time and within budget.
