Research and development centre with innovative low-energy concept

Fronius International GmbH is a company very active in the fields of welding, solar technology, and battery charging technology. To encourage these technologies, a new research and development centre for developers and engineers was created in Thalheim near Wels (Austria).

We worked on this project providing building services engineering for the new offices, laboratories and production facilities. As the laboratories and production facilities required very large amounts of electrical power and had to be well cooled at the same time; we developed a comprehensive low-energy concept that includes energy generated with the aid of photovoltaics, river water and borehole heat exchangers. The waste heat from the development laboratories is stored and fully exploited for the heating of the centre as a whole.

The building also includes a highly energy-efficient façade system that rounds off this low-energy concept with optimised natural ventilation and lighting.
