Arup, in joint venture with Atkins China Ltd, was appointed by the MTR Corporation to carry out the preliminary design of the Hong Kong tunnel section for the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link (XRL).
Complete in 2018, the XRL provides high speed rail services from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and a connection to the national high-speed passenger rail network serving major mainland cities outside Guangdong province.
The total length of the XRL is 142km and the Hong Kong section consists of approximately 26km of tunnel from a new terminus station in West Kowloon to the boundary at Huanggang. The work includes tunnel ventilation shafts/adits, associated ancillary buildings and facilities, emergency access shafts and an emergency rescue station, plus stabling and a first line maintenance point.

Arup’s appointment includes architecture, civil and structural engineering, MEP, town planning, landscape, quantity surveying, and specialist support, such as system assurance and aerodynamic studies. The initial focus will be on route evaluation and selection, development of the functional requirements and concept design, followed by completion of the preliminary design to allow the scheme to be gazetted under the Hong Kong government’s Railway Ordinance and to develop the project cost estimate. Arup has also been appointed under a separate consultancy to provide fire engineering services for the XRL tunnels.
