Winner of an international design competition, Pavilion B is part of ambitious plans to redevelop the Genoa Trade Fair. Located directly on the seafront, the building includes two vast exhibition areas, arranged over two levels.
Ateliers Jean Nouvel and Arup worked together on the project, designing a structure that better met the needs of a modern exhibition space, with a special focus on building services and architectural aspects. The slim precast concrete slabs allow large services zones and were only possible through close coordination between discipline teams.
The entire south facade of the building opens onto the sea, affording spectacular views. To protect visitors from direct sun, this side of the building is shaded by an impressive 32m cantilever roof.
With the first exhibition floor at sea level, the building is connected directly with the exhibited boats in the marina. The second level has a 12m-high façade, allowing indirect natural light deep into the space.
The building services were designed to satisfy the requirements of a modern exhibition centre and to achieve maximum flexibility inside the display areas. Its location means that seawater can be used as a thermal exchange fluid all year around, providing a constant source of energy for heating and air conditioning.
