Reusable sustainability guidelines for a global corporation

Arup was appointed by a world-famous resort developer to create a set of sustainability guidelines that can be applied each time they build a new resort anywhere in the world.

For corporations that operate globally, sustainability guidelines which can be applied successfully to any location are critical to meeting sustainability goals and taking advantage of associated opportunities.

Achieving this is often difficult because global locations vary in character and solutions that work well in one region may fail to deliver the expected results in another.

Arup provided the developer with a set of sustainability guidelines they can use in developing new resorts the world over, confident that wherever they build they can achieve the best results possible. Arup identified measures that can be implemented in each climatic region, meeting the client’s sustainability goals and delivering real financial benefits.

Arup first identified seven areas of sustainability matching the developer’s goals, including reduction in water and energy use, carbon footprint, operating and maintenance costs and raising guest and staff awareness.

Resource Conservation Measures (RCMs) were identified for each of the seven areas of focus. Each RCM was then analysed, based on environmental, economic and qualitative parameters and, most importantly, its appropriateness for each of four global climate zones, hot-dry, hot-humid, temperate and cold-alpine.

Results and sustainable performance parameters were then calculated for each RCM . Estimated savings per annum, payback periods, return on investment and CO2 savings were also detailed for each scenario.

In all four climatic regions, the firm identified solutions that, if applied, would generate between US$900,000 and $1.1m in annual savings and reduce CO2 output by over 7,000 tons.

Client collaboration was integral to the success of the development of the guidelines. All of the RCMs were developed in conjunction with the client through a series of charrettes and meetings. Progress meetings provided updates to the client and kept them fully informed.

By identifying measures that can be implemented in each climatic region, Arup is helping to meet this client’s sustainability goals and ensure its financial advantage in the market.
