As lead consultant, Arup provided multidisciplinary services for the Streamlining Hoddle Street initiative for our client, VicRoads.
A high profile study within Victoria as well as Australia, the Hoddle Street-Punt Road corridor is arguably the most important arterial road in inner Melbourne. It has a number of challenges in balancing competing priorities for pedestrians, cyclists, buses, trams, freight and private vehicles. It carries up to 130,000 people along the corridor and 200,000 people across the corridor each day.
Arup’s study developed options to maximise the efficiency of the existing corridor for all road users, drawing upon intelligent transport system technology and design innovations from around the world. Arup also developed an animated visualisation of the intersection design which can be viewed here.
Through a process of strategy formation, design development and triple bottom line appraisal, the study identified a preferred option for improving conditions along and across the corridor. The designs explored the use of continuous flow intersections designed to improve intersection efficiency by reducing delays caused by right turning traffic. This approach allows for increased public transport priority, improved walking and cycling conditions, as well as safer and more reliable journeys by private and commercial vehicles. The project and complementary technology improvements will be among the first of their type in Australia.
Under a compressed timeframe, the Streamlining Hoddle Street Initiative was successfully completed to align with the overall project program, with the project receiving funding for the recommended Stage 1 works. The project is continuing into detailed design with construction expected to commence in 2017.
