Replacement of fender system and refurbishment of pier for larger vessels

Trinity House Pier in Harwich, UK, provides a berthing facility for the vessels ofTrinity House Lighthouse Service and acts as a base for the navigation aid servicing and other activities of the company.

The existing jetty restricted the size of craft able to dock and the largest vessel could use only one side. Arup was commissioned to devise options for refurbishment works to allow for larger vessels of approximately 65m length, 11m beam and 3.8m draft to berth.

Cantilever fender system

Arup undertook an options study for the replacement of the existing fender system and jetty refurbishment. A cantilever fender pile system propped against the jetty deck was developed. This enabled larger vessels to use the jetty and minimised expenditure by utilising strength of the existing jetty.

Steel and concrete repairs were specified with the contractor incentivised to complete the maximum amount of repair work within a specific budget.

Arup monitored the construction and provided technical advice during concrete repair and fender installation works.
