Hiscox Building, York

An iconic office building in Yorks medieval heart

The bespoke new office for global insurer Hiscox – its first new-build office ever – in York is a bold, exciting project for not only the client, but also for the city of York itself.

From the outset, Hiscox wanted a building that was both architecturally outstanding and supremely functional. The design team, comprising Arup, Make Architects and KKS Strategy, along with contractor BAM , worked closely to deliver a tailored solution that addressed every demand of the rigorous and nuanced brief.

The building was created with the needs of occupants, aiming to enhance their day-to-day experience, at the heart of design. Imbue the building with a unique sense of ‘Hiscox-ness’ – was also a key requirement. The design moderates between the rich heritage of the site, contemporary design, cutting-edge construction techniques, and the unique demands of the client. A perfect balance between form and function.

The landmark office building has “exceeded all our expectations,” says Hiscox chief operating officer Alan Millard. The building also contributes to the economic, social and cultural life of York. It is part of the major investment Hiscox is making there that will create up to 500 new jobs and aims to establish York as a desirable location for business.

The success of the Hiscox Building has been recognised in the RIBA Yorkshire, BCO Awards and IStructE regional awards.
