Il Sole 24 Ore Headquarters Milan, Milan

The first 'chilled beam' design in Italy

The leading Italian financial media group, Il Sole 24 Ore, wanted to rationalise their presence in Milan.

Arup worked with the architect to provide an elegant and efficient solution for the structure and services engineering design of the building, which contains the main pressrooms for the newspaper, as well as a television studio and conference centre.

The new headquarters has been formed from a total refurbishment of an existing structure in the centre of Milan, along with elements of new build.

The existing complex, previously of industrial use, consisted of five rectangular blocks arranged around a courtyard. The existing reinforced concrete frame was retained and two additional floors added using steel frames.

The services solution uses a chilled beam design, believed to be the first of its type in Italy. The building is an exemplar sustainable and low-energy development.
