A Zaha Hadid design with an irregular building shape on a confined site

Another striking design by Zaha Hadid, the building has Zaha’s signature style and is distorted in a delicate way, unarguably standing out at the campus of Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Arup provided structural, MEP, façade and fire engineering and geotechnical support to Zaha.

The building houses the School of Design and various studios and labs, a museum and a public gallery, accommodating 1,700 students and 100 staff.

Project Summary

1st Zaha Hadid’s first permanent architectural design in Hong Kong, unarguably standing out at the campus of Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

1,700 Home for the School of Design' student

Multiple challenges were posed by the irregularity of the building shape, the confined site and the multitude of user’s requirements.

3D drafting and BIM approach were adopted to resolve the complex, yet undefined and evolving geometry of the building. Arup’s structural solution saved the tight headroom by avoiding long cantilevers.

The passageways through the building not only allow audience to visually admire and engage with work and exhibits, but also promote new opportunities of interaction between the diverse types of users through its spaces at every level.
