Chongqing Xiyong Integrated planning, Chongqing

Planning and urban design with innovative sustainability elements

Xiyong sub-centre is one of six major sub-centres established in the Chongqing Comprehensive Masterplan and holds a key position in the municipality’s urban expansion for the next 20 years. Xiyong also acts as a centre serving major developments in the surrounding, including the micro-electronics industrial park, Chongqing University and a logistics park.

Arup's scheme emphasised the integration of urban design with innovative sustainable design elements.

Innovation in sustainability

Arup proposed the establishment of a wetland and eco-belt system to prevent flooding. Mountains, rivers and green parks would be connected with the wetland system, creating an accessible ‘green network’ that integrates the development and the surrounding natural environment.

The plan is an example of a 'transit-oriented development' – maximising the use of public transport, especially metro. Land use around metro stations has been arranged to integrate with the development, reducing private car use and promoting green travel.

Integrated approach

The design strategy also integrates the surrounding industrial developments with major functional clusters, including tourism, transport, commercial areas and knowledge and innovation facilities.

Sustainable building design elements such as green roofs, a sky garden and a green plaza with rain water harvesting function in high density environment. The development will also demonstrate reduced use of potable water, water conservation and increased use of renewable energy.

Arup’s scheme clearly demonstrates an integrated approach to sustainable urban design.
