The Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, part of the University of Limerick’s campus, is a centre of academic and performance excellence for the performing arts.
The centre is both an academic research facility and a leading arts venue, providing a space for musicians, dancers, composers, singers, conductors and choreographers from across the globe to come together and celebrate music. Arup provided civil and structural engineering consultancy services on this project.
With a remit to take performing arts back to the community, the Academy also hosts a series of outreach and artists-in-residence initiatives. The building’s 4,850m² of floor area offers a range of world-class facilities such as two performance theatres, a recording studio, individual practice rooms and dance studios, as well as office space and meeting rooms.

World-leading facility
Both theatres have sprung dance floors and are equipped with professional sound and lighting rigs, as well as multi-track recording capabilities. As well as networked audio throughout, the building’s technical infrastructure includes dedicated recording and editing studios; and there are more than 40 music rooms for rehearsals and classes.
As a centre of knowledge, the faculty includes performers, academics and industry professionals, with courses from undergraduate up until postgraduate level and world-class research.
The Academy hosts a series of dance and music festivals during the year, and holds public seminars, recitals and arts gatherings, providing a snapshot of the global music scene.
