As one of the main international airports in India, Kempegowda International Airport continues to experience a significant increase in the number of passengers using its terminal. With its new building (T2) still under construction, the airport had to extend its existing Terminal 1 to accommodate the country’s fast-growing aviation industry. The aim of the expansion was to not only increase its capacity, but also provide better facilities and services for travellers.

From concept through to design development, Arup provided structural, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical, public health, facade, and baggage handling design services. Our work allowed the airport to accommodate additional passenger and handling capacity by creating extra spaces and integrating them seamlessly into the existing structure.

A key part of the terminal extension’s visual identity is its distinctive swooping roof, which brings new and existing facilities together. Our design extended the existing terminal building on both sides, including an expansion of the East Pier. The western extension hosts an additional area for parking aircraft, which can be used for handling, servicing and maintenance, as well as providing 36 check-in counters. The eastern extension is focused on baggage reclaim, incorporating three new carousels..

Our design helped Kempegowda International Airport maintain its key role in the national aviation by accommodating an increasing passenger and baggage handling demand. The airport’s extension improves its visual aesthetics, while providing improved services and new retail facilities for travellers. The new areas of the building also incorporate significant internal landscaping and provide additional retail facilities, which both improve the overall passenger experience
