A meticulous, integrated design for a non-profit institution

Koç University, a non-profit institution founded in 1993 on a hill close to Istanbul, Türkiye, feeling far removed from the distractions of city life. The buildings are the product of a meticulous, integrated design.

The university comprises 90,000m² buildings in a forest region of 200ha. Arup provided structural, infrastructuralmechanical and electrical engineering services. Infrastructure, mechanical and electrical facility capacities are designed with consideration for possible future expansion of the campus.

Natural materials

Using warm, natural materials including stone, plaster, wood and clay roof tiles, the architecture is a blend of the early Republican Era of Istanbul and the timeless characteristics of well-established academic institutions. The area includes academic and administrative buildings, laboratories, a library, dormitories, faculty residences and social and sports facilities.

Expansion and extensions

Arup has provided engineering design and executive architectural services for a range of extensions and additions to the campus since 2005.

Considering the environment

Serious environmental considerations have been undertaken, including measures to ensure zero wastewater discharge. Treated wastewater is used to spray the surrounding forest area to achieve 100% treatment, recharge the ground water and maintain a humid forest base to minimise the risk of forest fires in summer.
