Kreekrak Bridge, Zeeland and Noord-Brabant

Prolonging the life of the important bridge connection by 30 years as a result from a challenging renovation

Spanning 140m, the Kreekrak Bridge forms an important connection between the provinces of Zeeland and Noord-Brabant. It consists of two steel bridges in the motorway A58, crossing the waterway Schelde-Rijn between Rotterdam and Antwerp.

Suffering fatigue damage due to increasing traffic weight and intensity, the Kreekrak Bridge required repair and strengthening in order to keep the bridge open to traffic and to gain sufficient static strength for future traffic loads.

We renovated the bridge successfully, by jacking the bridge, strengthening the main steel girders and adding a High Strength Concrete (HSC) overlay. The sequencing of the renovation works has been optimised to ensure an efficient system to minimise hindrance to both canal and road users.

Throughout the process we worked closely with the technical, procurement and maintenance departments of our client Rijkswaterstaat, part of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, to ensure a successful delivery of this challenging renovation project.

Acting as Managing Contractor together with our joint venture partner Royal HaskoningDHV, we were responsible for assessment, strengthening design, procurement management, contract management and construction supervision.
