The Kwai Tsing Theatre offers world-class performance facilities in Hong Kong. Comprised of a 1,000 seat theatre and concert hall, a 150 seat black box theatre, lecture hall and dance studio, it covers a total area of 25,000m2.
Due to the theatre’s close proximity to the West Rail line underground railway, work was required to mitigate any disturbance to the audience and the performances. Arup’s solution was to implement a sophisticated railway vibration isolation system that sits beneath the auditorium. The system includes double-layer foundations, undercrofts, steel-spring bearings and railway isolation joints.
As well as providing structural and geotechnical engineering, the team also designed the entrance foyer’s glass wall and butterfly-shaped entrance canopy.
