Llewellyn Hall Canberra, Canberra, ACT

Llewellyn Hall is home to the School of Music at Australian National University

The Llewellyn Hall has been a hub of cultural activity in Canberra since the 1970s. The 1440 seat concert hall sustained storm damage in 2007 and prompted the Australian National University to undertake an AU$10m refurbishment of the theatre design and audio-visual systems.

Our specialist acoustics and theatre design team worked together to create a plan that built on the Hall’s respected acoustic reputation for orchestral music, while expanding its acoustic repertoire for other performances, particularly the more intimate chamber music. The fundamental goal was to enhance the musical experience for both musician and patron.

Arup’s SoundLab facilitated a fast track programme and proved a valuable tool in allowing the team and client to listen to the proposed changes and make prompt, educated design decisions.

The entire refurbishment was completed in a one year fast track programme with a notable improvement in the quality of sound and the extended range of musical response. Llewellyn Hall is the home of the Canberra Symphony, Canberra Choral Society and Canberra Community Orchestra.
