Situated in the north-west New Territories, alongside Deep Bay and beyond the new town of Tin Shui Wai, Lau Fau Shan is an important heritage site and one of Hong Kong’s last unexploited gems, famous for its scenic beauty and oyster feasts.
Arup is undertaking an 18-month planning study to realise the tourism and recreational potential of Lau Fau Shan and the surrounding area (565ha). Given the township’s rich landscape and natural resources, the planning study focuses on three main areas: preservation of natural resources, culture and sustainability.

Working closely with the local community, the Stage 1 Community Engagement Programme for the study has been successfully completed. After a series of briefing sessions, public forums and a roving exhibition to engage the public of various backgrounds, a planning framework and design schemes have been developed.
The planning framework demonstrates a concept for shaping Lau Fau Shan as an eco-cultural park encapsulating ecological, cultural and natural resources and providing an extension to the education and conservation mindset of the nearby conservation and wetland park areas.
The township will feature a comprehensive pedestrian and cycle network as an important part of the visitor experience, supplementing the conventional destination-oriented approach to tourism.
The plan for Lau Fau Shan aims to revive the area’s cultural past and restore civic pride. Arup will work together with the local community in an upcoming Stage 2 Community Engagement Programme.
