Lincolnshire Waste to Energy facility, North Hykham

Generating enough electricity to power 10,000 homes

Arup provided the lead civil works consultancy and full design services to Clugston Construction Ltd for Lincolnshire’s Energy from Waste (EfW) facility. This included geotechnical, civil, structural, fire, acoustic and non-process mechanical, electrical and public health engineering services.

Led by Arup, the EfW design was delivered in a BIM co-ordination model using 3D modelling and drafting to facilitate the design and coordination process. This enhanced communication facilitates services integration, clash detection, and process design planning, leading to faster and smoother construction.

The facility, which treats approximately 150,000 tonnes of waste a year, was delivered through a joint venture between Clugston and technology provider CNIM for operator Waste Recycling Group. The plant is capable of producing 11 MW net electricity for export to the grid and includes ancillary infrastructure such as landscaping, administration offices and a visitor centre.
