Meilenwerk vintage car centre, Düsseldorf

Refurbishment and extension of an historic engine shed

The Meilenwerk is an ‘active’ centre for vintage cars, including specialist workshops, car dealers and garages for private rental.

The centre was built in an unused Deutsche Bahn engine shed in Düsseldorf. The original building was completely restored, preserving its historic features. New one and two-storey constructions were integrated for use as garages and offices.

The building has a spacious interior event space based on the original interesting half-circle plan. It is spanned with a light roof made from ETFE cushions, supported by reinforced concrete to create a graceful ceiling.

Three two-storey reinforced steel constructions, which bear the load from the roof, complete the exterior.

A contemporary building for a car dealership was also constructed with reinforced steel – complementing the original engine shed.
