Melbourne Airport Southern Precinct Program, Melbourne

Creating a lasting legacy for Melbourne Airport through its largest transformation

Arup was commissioned by Melbourne Airport to help deliver an integrated landside domestic terminal and airside development to provide the best passenger experience for visitors at the Tullamarine Airport.

The Southern Precinct Program is the largest private infrastructure investment of its kind and is part of Melbourne Airport’s biggest transformation. Stage 1 of the development was completed in mid-2015 with the new domestic terminal providing capacity to handle up to 10 million passengers per annum, and supporting ground transportation facilities of a new multi-level structure accommodating up to 3,000 parking spaces, drop off/pick up facilities and bus/taxi interchange, in addition to a new elevated road structure.  A new service tunnel under Service Rd assisted in strengthening the unseen route for the supply of utilities to the development.

Arup provided a diverse and integrated team across many disciplines including building engineering, infrastructure, transport planning, blast engineering, acoustics, HV (high voltage) electrical design services.

In addition, Arup has worked closely with the Airport’s environment team to ensure the embedding of sustainability elements into the capital works planning to ensure a ‘best-design solution’, one which addresses future climate change events and future third runway development.

The coordinated design allowed for future phases under the Southern Precinct program to further expand the terminal facilities to 35,000 square meters, catering for 20 million passengers.
