Mipec Riverside is a mixed-use development in Hanoi comprising two 35-storey residential towers connected by a 7-storey podium providing spaces for office, retail and recreational facilities with two levels of basement for car parking.
Arup’s civil, geotechnical and structural engineers worked closely to deliver this architectural highlight in the capital city.
The unique curve geometry of the tower blocks with multiple openings pose several challenges to structural engineers as to how to control the stability of the buildings and the cracks on the post tension slabs. In response, we developed a non-standard structural core with long span post tensioned floors to achieve the stability and provide flexible spaces.
The development is located close to River Song Hong, adjacent to the Long Bien elevated rail line, and abuts an aged embankment – all these creates a high underground water level. Moreover, the weak first soil layers make designs for the foundation, retaining walls and basement slabs challenging. The team carefully considered the complex circumstances and successfully come up with a set of mitigating measures.
