As part of a multi-disciplinary team of experts, Arup was involved in preparation of rules for sustainable maintenance of gravel-bed streams and rivers in southern Poland.
The changes in the Carpathian's rivers resulted in a number of threats to the water management and the ecological condition of the aquatic ecosystems. Existing methods of river maintenance proved unsustainable, economically ineffective or not viable. In addition, these needed to be reviewed in line with the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive.
Improving river maintenance
Identification, assessment and restoring
This includes identification of threats and impacts on the environment, as well as the development of methods of assessment and restoring disturbed equilibrium conditions in mountain watercourses.
Furthermore, we have studied the rivers continuity and free channel migration within the 'river corridor'. We also defined criteria for existing structures evaluation and an approach to construction works.
