Development and implementation of a Knowledge and Information Management infrastructure

Hong Kong's Mass Transit Rail Corporation is responsible for constructing and operating the MTR, one of the world’s leading railways, carrying approximately 3.7m passengers every day.

Arup worked collaboratively with MTR Corporation’s Projects Division to develop and implement a Knowledge and Information Management infrastructure. A cost-effective solution that exceeded the client’s expectations was conceived, developed and implemented within 12 months.

The project required analysis and development of a requirements specification for the configuration of off-the-shelf collaborative software and development of a system of categorisation that suited MTR’s internal structure.

Communities of practice and networks were established to facilitate collaboration, problem solving, sharing best practices and professional development.

Arup also worked with MTR on technical implementation of the system, bringing experience in project management and change management. A programme of communication and education was carried out to ensure that the new infrastructure was positively adopted within MTR Corporation.

“The Arup consultants brought recognised expertise in the knowledge management arena that has been applied throughout the engineering and construction industry in real and practical terms throughout the world.”
