The existing nuclear plant in Muhleberg, Switzerland is due to close in 2020 and be replaced.
The client (BKW) identified four new sites around the existing plant which may be suitable to host a replacement reactor. Arup was commissioned to undertake site feasibility studies.
Work was carried out in seven workstreams, including space and layout, ground and foundations, cooling systems, transport and logistics, meteorology and flooding, seismic and aircraft impact.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
GIS was used for data visualisation including 3D fly-throughs, analysis and information management.
A CAD model of the proposed plant layout was created in a 3D environment. This demonstrates visual impact from varied vantage points, aircraft impact and helps to calculate cut and fill balance – the work required to level the land.
Ground investigation data and digital maps were used to create a geological ground model. Existing site investigation data from previous reports was made accessible through an interactive map.
