Arup took a very collaborative approach in helping to redevelop decades-old government quarters at Cochrane, Cheras into a new, contemporary business hub. Structurally connected to the Cochrane MRT station and the Cheras IKEA Store, this new MyTOWN shopping centre offers five levels of retail, F&B, leisure and entertainment with a 13-hall cinema complex. It has six levels of carparks including two basement levels.
Building and foundation design over MRT tunnel
We led the civil, structural and geotechnics of this fast-track project. The footprint lies over an MRT tunnel route, making it crucial to comply with stringent Local Railways Act requirements. Our design team achieved strong and seamless coordination with local authorities and the tunnel designers, leading to the timely completion of building and foundation designs over the tunnel. This enhances the mall’s accessibility as shoppers taking the MRT can easily access MyTOWN through a tunnel link.

Engineering solution to a wide, unobstructed interior
To accommodate the client’s vision of an exciting retail mall with large voids and wide column-free consumer spaces, we designed 16m tree columns that branched out to support floors above using our in-house software GSA.
We advised the column branches inclination to be within 30 degrees with vertical to optimise the load carrying ability of the column that lead to a more effective structure We also employed 19m to 25m long steel trusses spanning above the voids to support six floors of carparks, M&E rooms and atrium roofs.
