The Octav Botnar Wing is the first international and private patients’ hospital to be built on London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital campus as part of the site redevelopment.
The £52m, 10,000m2 high-quality hospital provides state-of-the-art healthcare facilities for children including operating theatres with recovery area, aseptic suite, inpatient and outpatient departments and orthopedic department.
Atrium courtyards for daylight penetration
Arup’s innovative use of two atrium courtyards provides maximum natural daylight penetration into the clinical floors. The design uses one of the atria for the main intake shaft to the air handling units in the basement – reducing the need for intake ducts and saving valuable clinical space.
Flexible modular building services
The service design provides future flexibility using versatile systems such as modular wiring, combined with a high level of environmental comfort for both staff and patients.
Arup’s expert skills in the design of pressurised evacuation staircase mechanical ventilation eliminated the need for a separate air shaft so that clinical space could be maximised further.
The building won a London Borough of Camden ‘Built In Quality’ award 2005 in the Large Commercial category.
