Structural design for a seismic retrofit of existing buildings

Latest codes and standards

Arup provided the structural design for a seismic retrofit of existing buildings, which have been identified as non-compliant with P&G company standards. The design will comply with the latest version of the Italian seismic code, P&G company standards and American standards.

Long lasting relationship

The relationship between Arup and Procter and Gamble spans 30 years and 200 projects. We have worked together on manufacturing and corporate facilities, including due diligences, surveys, retrofit designs, fit-outs and new designs.

Most recently, we provided engineering services in Italy in three different facilities: Campochiaro (8,000m2), Gattatico (16,000m2) and Pomezia (27,000m2).

Retrofit without disturbing production

In order to minimise the retrofit impact on the facilities' activity and to avoid line production stopping or slowing down, for each building Arup teamed up with the technical staff of the facility and carried out advanced analyses.

Elements of the project included the seismic retrofit of steel, reinforced concrete and masonry structures.

In order to minimise the size and impact of the intervention in the facilities, Arup carried out advanced analyses. These include static push-over analysis, dynamic finite element analysis, response spectrum analysis, linear and non-linear time history analysis. The results led to innovative solutions being proposed, such as column strengthening using fibre reinforced polymers.
