RWE Siting Study, Cumbria

Assessment of potential sites for new-build nuclear power stations

Arup supported RWE Npower on potential nuclear power station development in west Cumbria – providing technical input to the nomination of sites for inclusion in the UK Draft National Policy Statement on Nuclear Power.

Initial pre-feasibility level studies provided a high-level consideration of nuclear power station site development factors.

Further topic-specific technical studies were also commissioned to address site suitability and to identify high-level constraints, opportunities and development risks in regards to three sites in Cumbria.

Specific technical assessments

Arup’s assessments included an environmental assessment considering issues of particular sensitivity to the natural and built environment, and a landscape and visual assessment to determine the visual impact of the power stations.

Transport assessments included studies into road and rail access, capacity and options for bulk and abnormal loads.

Arup helped to develop a range of scenarios for reactor layouts, and geotechnical evaluations of sub-surface conditions at the sites. A cooling water study was developed to assess potential thermal cooling and conceptual designs.
