Shenzhen Metro Line 4 is a 20.5km double-track urban railway with a total of 15 stations, running from Futian Station located at the boundary between Hong Kong and Shenzhen at Huanggang area to Longhua New Town in Shenzhen.
In May 2005, the MTR Corporation signed an agreement with the Shenzhen Government for the investment, construction and operation of the whole Metro Line 4 for 30 years.
Phase 1 of the project comprises a 4.5km section between Huanggang and Shaoniangong, and commenced service in 2004.
Project Summary
20.5km double-track urban railway
15 stations
1st‘build-operate-transfer’ railway project in mainland China by the MTR Corporation
The design consortium of Arup and Beijing Urban Engineering Design & Research Institute was awarded the preliminary design contract and later the detailed design contracts. Arup is acting as the lead consultant.
Phase 2 comprises a 6km underground section with two underground stations, and a 10km elevated section with eight stations. Works include alignment design, station and depot planning, station and viaduct structural design, long-span viaducts, building services, railway systems, project management, temporary traffic management, construction planning as well as risks assessment.
Arup has provided services for all aspects of the extension – the underground section, elevated section, train depot, trackwork and railway systems.
With a total length of 16km, the entire phase two extension has four detailed design contracts – C401, an underground section; C403, an elevated section; C406 which comprises a depot and the overall Line 4 trackwork; and C410 which comprises railway systems.
To maximise cost effectiveness, Arup carried out a study to evaluate the structural efficiency of different forms of viaducts and performed value engineering.
The depot facility
The depot is a facility for a fleet of 44 Electric Multiple Units (EMU) operated as six-car trains. The depot area covers some 30ha, with buildings taking up 23.5ha. Maintenance facilities comprise depressed floor maintenance tracks, two heavy maintenance tracks with train lifting equipment, 40 stabling berths, maintenance workshops, underfloor wheel lathe, paint shop, trainwash plant, rail stillage and permanent way sidings.
The depot is integrated with an 8.7ha podium structure that supports future property development for multiple towers ranging from 7-18 storeys. Arup was also responsible for the topside development under a separate property development consultancy for all MTR Corporation property sites along the line.
Contract C410 involves ten railway system contracts, of which five are designed by the Arup consortium. These five systems cover power supply, communications, fire alarms, lifts and escalators. Other systems are designed by MTR. Arup is managing the design for all ten systems including interface planning and management, time and cost control and coordination with local government and other consultants.
