Scharberg Bridge, Elsloo

Increasing the bridge's life period by High Strength Concrete resurfacing and steel strengthening measures

The Scharberg Bridge consists of two identical (structurally independent) bridges which span the Maas river and the Juliana Canal. Built in 1967 the bridge suffered from fatigue of the steel orthotropic deck plate. The solution to this involved our product development of a suitable high strength concrete (HSC).

Our role within the project included all technical management activities from development of pre-inspection plans to design of the main structure’s strengthening. Important aspects were the 3D modeling of the global and local existing structure and the 3D fatigue assessment of the steel elements and connections.

We were also responsible for the procurement and management of the contractor and for the technical tender documents including bridge specific drawings and input and review of generic project specification.

The bridge is part of a large scale renovation project of eight steel bridges, also known as the Managing Contractor project, carried out in a joint venture with Royal HaskoningDHV. To find out more about this project, watch the video 'Renovation of Eight Steel Bridges'.
