In Botswana, we were responsible for the civil, structural, building, foundation, and infrastructure engineering of a new Soda ash project, with the plant aiming to recover industrial soda ash from a 150km2 wellfield in a remote corner of Southern Africa.

In London, Arup undertook the structure and services design for the new building at The National Gallery, the Sainsbury Wing, in Trafalgar Square. This article concentrates on the rigorous environmental systems developed for the safe display and storage of some 240 early Renaissance paintings in a variety of media.

Other articles in this issue include a look at our work at London Wall, where we developed a 'fabric engineering' service for the architect, our work looking at the economic viability of reclaiming two despoiled sites in West Yorkshire and a survey of work by our communications and information technology teams.
