This issue includes two articles considering the role of technology and computing in engineering - firstly our work with EMI to develop a computer program to simulate various lighting effects, and secondly we consider whether electronic feedback mechanisms for self-monitoring building services may be extendable to a building's structure.
The cover story for this issue is our design for Legal & General's new HQ in Kingswood UK, which was conceived as a formal and sophisticated design to complement a Downland site of outstanding natural beauty.
We also republish Peter Rice's RIBA Gold Medal speech on his philosophy of engineering design.
