Arup’s theatre consultants advised on improvements and designed modern technical systems for this historic English theatre.
The forestage is demountable for flexibility and a large trapped area on the fixed stage allows for the recreation of the Georgian system of traps and the utilisation of original stage machinery in the future. The project also included motorised hoists over the stage.
The original entrance to the pit seating is recreated through the stage riser, and the full Georgian forestage and stage boxes are recreated to re-establish the correct actor/audience relationship.
A new foyer to the side of the theatre provides a bar for the audience and space for receptions.
Described as "the most beautiful theatre in England", the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds is one of the few surviving Regency theatres.
Despite its historic status it remains a busy venue, producing much of its own work and taking in touring productions on a regular basis.
As well as the RIBA Award east in 2008, the theatre received the USITT Honor Award and a Civic Trust Award.
The regeneration of this lovely playhouse is little short of a miracle... all the people who have worked tirelessly to make it live again will never be forgotten.
