Re-calculations of the 210m long superstructure and design of strengthening measures

Arup had been appointed by the Landesbetrieb Straßenbau North Rhine-Westphalia for the design of the strengthening works for Viaduct Ostönner Bach along the A 44 Motorway in Germany. The bridge has a post tensioned concrete superstructure and was built in 1970. The structure had deficits in shear strength and decompression. Arup was also responsible for the assessment of the 210m long deck and the bearings as well as the subsequent strengthening.

The bridge deck cross section is a single cell box girder. It was built span by span and it is post tensioned in longitudinal as well as transverse direction. The bridge has six spans in total, the internal spans are 38m long.

The re-calculation and assessment were carried out based on the current guideline for recalculation of bridges in Germany in conjunction with the German bridge code DIN Fachbericht. Ultimate limit checks as well as serviceability checks and fatigue checks were carried out.

Following on from the results of the recalculation we designed the strengthening works in longitudinal direction by means of adding external tendons with deviation points over the support and at midspan.
