Design consultancy for Hong Kong's West Island Line

In a joint venture with Atkins China Ltd, Arup was commissioned to conduct detailed design consultancy for Hong Kong's West Island Line, the MTR Corporation’s first extension to the existing Island Line.

The multidisciplinary consultancy includes two deep-cavern stations at Sai Ying Pun and University, each with significant lengths of pedestrian subway connections and some 1.8km of twin-track running tunnels.

This commission is the most complex and challenging underground railway project undertaken by the MTR Corporation due to the depth and urban location of the stations. This has led to station concourses accessed from street level entrances via deep shafts. High speed lifts are combined with long pedestrian tunnels.

Project Summary

2 deep-cavern stations

3kmIsland Line extension

The 760m of twin tunnels between Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun presented significant construction challenges, including the break-in of one of the new tunnels to the existing cast-iron segmental overrun tunnel.

The project was partially commissioned in end 2014 and came into full service in March 2015 with the opening of Sai Ying Pun Station.
