Commuter and mainline rail design infrastructure, stations and masterplans
With the high investment costs associated with rail programmes we understand the significance of providing good value for money and high performing assets that are efficient to maintain.
From route, tunnels, viaducts and tracks to trains, stations and surrounding masterplans, our leading team of multidisciplinary experts work with clients to design transformative railways.
Our tunnelling and rail design experts ensure that schemes manage to align both climate and cost imperatives, finding ways to reduce the resources and materials used in construction and plan for their eventual renewal or replacement. We also bring our deep domain expertise of operational railways into design thinking for rail maintenance depots.
Electrification of the Great Western Main Line in the UK is the biggest upgrade to the line since it was built over 175 years ago. Delivering this has required significant renewal of associated infrastructure as well as electrification of the line itself.
Arup’s contribution to the Great Western Main Line electrification programme has been significant, including the design of the overhead line, foundations and major enabling works for several sections of the route.
Our specialist rail architecture and design team approach every project with the passenger and ‘user’ experience at the heart of decision-making. This helps ensure stations are intuitive and a joy to use, complement their surroundings, and are efficient to maintain. Our global experience blending function with elegance in a cost-effective manner, such as our kit-of-parts design approach, ensures maintenance and replacements remain affordable over the rail system's full lifespan.
We also use a place-based approach to decision-making for rail projects, meaning that every choice relating to the route, station or design is evaluated for its potential to deliver wider economic prosperity, strengthen social connectivity, and regenerate urban and rural areas.
