Designing national road networks
Arup has worked on highway design for over 50 years, delivering safe local, national and regional road networks and interchanges that make sense in their surrounding context.
On each project we find new ways to cut travel times, improve road capacity, decarbonise networks and advise on the most sustainable use of materials. We bring innovation and quality design to clients across every corner of the world, both from within Arup and the wider industry.
We also consider the impact the national network has on traffic flow into cities. For example, Doyle Drive in San Francisco was no longer capable of serving its daily commuters from outside of the city. Our design concept was to create a parkway, not a highway, which was much better suited to the change in traffic patterns the road was now having to support as it connected into San Francisco city streets.
We also design some of the world’s most iconic road bridge and tunnel structures and ensure they make sense in the context of the broader road and transport network.
Arup, in a joint venture with Jacobs, was engaged as the designer for the Fulton Hogan Seymour Whyte Joint Venture (FHSW JV) to construct the Bruce Highway Upgrade, from Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway (CR2SM).
The project team developed an innovative design solution to transform the Caloundra Road interchange into a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) - the first of its kind in Australia.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads has now adopted the DDI methodology for more interchange sites across Southeast Queensland. This project helped develop new Australian road design guidelines to inform future implementations of the DDI in Queensland and shared more broadly across Australia.
